Juan José Camacho

1950–

Juan José Camacho (b. 1950) is a Mexican painter, born in Coyoacán, in Mexico City. He came to art through comics and taught himself graphic design and illustration. According to Galería Vórtice, he founded a design studio that made advertising campaigns, illustrations and packaging, and later helped draw up the design curriculum at the Universidad Ibero. His first solo exhibition was at the Museo de la Ciudad de México in 1980, and in 1984 he decided to paint full time. He is the father of the painter Theo Camacho, whose training, according to Terzo Gallery, began under him in 1996. Galería Vórtice's page for the painter Oscar Velasco says Velasco studied with the two of them for four years.

He has said that his style took shape almost by chance, when a vase in a painting he was correcting turned into a square cat with flowers on its head; the gallery dates the geometric creatures that recur in his work from that moment. Galería Vórtice describes jungle landscapes saturated with natural elements and bright colors, often at night, with a subtle presence of the moon. “Mis selvas están llenas de vida, color y luz” (my jungles are full of life, color and light), reads the statement of his that the BADA México art fair published when it presented him among its artists for 2025.

He has shown at the Casa de Cultura de Tlalpan in Mexico City, the Muestra Cultural Estrada in Houston, Galería La Sirena in Tucson and Galería Lucita Aguilera in Hermosillo. Galería Vórtice, in Mexico City's Roma Norte, said in 2025 that it shows his work permanently. Galería de Arte Camacho in Tepoztlán, Morelos, which describes itself on Instagram as a gallery by Juan José and Theo Camacho, also shows his paintings. He was listed among the artists of the show that marked Vórtice's reopening in Mérida, Yucatán, in a renovated space, on November 27, 2025. In January 2026 Galería de Arte Camacho posted what it called its new piece by him, a jungle titled El Dueño de la Selva (oil on canvas, 144 × 106 cm).
