1979–
Jesús Alberto Cataño Gamboa (b. 1979) is a painter born in Apartadó, in the Urabá region of Antioquia. In Urabá he is known as Chucho. He trained as an artist at the Instituto de Bellas Artes in Medellín.
His statement for Galería El Coleccionista describes using iron, cement and wood, materials of building construction, together with drawing and painting, to make visible the transformation of the city and how it breaks into nature. The gallery lists among his solo exhibitions UR-Vano at Arte Loft Galería in Medellín (2016) and Mole at Galería 12:00 in Bogotá (2018).
In February 2021 he began a series of oil portraits of El Picacho, a hill above Medellín, painted from life on the Punto Cero bridge. Each canvas shows the same view of the hill on a different day, and by June 2022 there were 240 of them, each 19 by 27 centimeters. He has said that what changes most are the clouds, the sky, and the color of the mountain and of the neighborhood on its slope. A first selection was included in the exhibition El jardín de los senderos que se bifurcan at the Museo de Antioquia.
In March 2024 he started a similar series in Bogotá on Monserrate, in oil on linen at 22 by 27 centimeters. Writing in El Malpensante that year, the historian Daniel Gutiérrez Ardila reported 150 paintings of Monserrate since March and described Cataño's subject as the way light, clouds, rain and mist interact with the mountains. His solo exhibition Notas sobre la construcción de una temporalidad distinta, on the mountains of Medellín and Bogotá, opened at Galería Docecerocero in Bogotá on September 7, 2024. In April 2025, during ARTBO Fin de Semana, Casa 73-22 showed his work in the exhibition Asuntos de hogar. In June 2026 La Independencia Casa de Subastas & Anticuario showed thirty of his paintings of Monserrate and announced a conversation with him about them for June 27.
