Yolanda Díaz Medina is a Wixárika (Huichol) artist who has made yarn paintings with Maximino Renteria de la Cruz. A folk art museum and several sellers credit works to the two of them together, while other listings put pieces under his name alone. Peyote People, a gallery whose collection page is titled “Maximino & Yolanda Renteria,” says Maximino married Yolanda in 1993 and that the couple began to develop a style of their own, which it describes as heavily influenced by the classic style of his teacher, José Benítez Sánchez.
A painting of theirs posted by the Folk Art Museum Central TX in October 2021 was made by pressing acrylic yarn into beeswax spread over a board, and carries on its back a description in Spanish and the artists' signatures. The museum offered a translation, and invited corrections: “In this picture we see how the shaman and the old woman perform the naming of the children and present them before the gods and sacred spirits.”
In November 2023 Peyote People reported a four-by-eight-foot yarn painting of the sacred gourd, credited to Maximino Renteria and Yolanda Diaz, on display at Galería Colectika in Puerto Vallarta, and wrote that the two make only two or three pieces that size a year. In August 2024 Peyote People and Colectika posted a painting credited to “Maximiliano Rentería y Yolanda Díaz,” 120 by 120 cm in plywood, wax and yarn, of the marakames and the Wixárika people who make the pilgrimage to Wirikuta every year.
