El venado maliciando que alguien lo está espiando

Santos Motoapohua de la Torre (1942–)

Beads, beeswax and plywood · 15 × 15 cm

The back is inscribed and signed: "El venado malisiando que alguien lo esta espiando hecho por Santos M. de la Torre de Santiago y familia" (The deer, suspecting someone is spying on it, made by Santos M. de la Torre de Santiago and family).

A deer stands at the center, with a scorpion under it, a candle beside it and flowers around it. Reporting in 2024 on the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana’s acquisition of de la Torre’s mural La luz del mundo. Dos divinidades, La Crónica de Hoy quoted James Ramey, a humanities researcher at the university, on the figures in it: “El ciervo, por ejemplo, es un animal poderosamente sagrado, visto como un mediador entre los mundos y un guía a lo largo de los caminos místicos del peyote” (the deer, for example, is a powerfully sacred animal, seen as a mediator between the worlds and a guide along the mystical paths of peyote).

Art of the Huichol Indians (1978) shows scorpions drawn the same way, with claws and a curled tail, embroidered along a clothing border from San Andrés ("Note scorpions, horses, birds, and plant forms."), and a "Votive bowl depicting deer hunt, man, and scorpions." Juan Negrín writes that beaded bracelets are "used as talismans; for example the design of a scorpion may be a prayer to guard against its sting."

In the Ruta Wixárika guide of Mexico's Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH), candles are "Elemento ritual básico. Representan la luz del Sol y la conexión con las deidades" (a basic ritual element. They represent the light of the Sun and the connection with the deities), and they are lit as offerings at the sacred sites. In the interpretation by Juan Negrín, who with Yvonne Negrín founded the Centro de Investigación Wixárika, of a yarn painting by Guadalupe González Ríos, "Flowers represent prayers for life and abundance."
