El conejo hermano mayor del venado

El conejo hermano mayor del venado

Santos Motoapohua de la Torre (1942–)

Beads, beeswax and plywood · 15 × 15 cm

The back is inscribed and signed: "El conejo hermano mayor del venado hecho por Santos M. de la Torre de Santiago y familia" (The rabbit, elder brother of the deer, made by Santos M. de la Torre de Santiago and family).

A rabbit is beaded between two candles. In the account the yarn painter Tutukila Carrillo Sandoval recorded with Juan Negrín, who with Yvonne Negrín founded the Centro de Investigación Wixárika, two deer-people, Tamatsi Kauyumari and Tatutsí Maxakuaxí, Our Great Grandfather Deer Tail, carry an arrow to Wirikuta, in the east, and the Centro's Spanish version of the account calls Deer Tail Kauyumari's "Hermano Mayor" (elder brother). On the way their antlers fall, and Deer Tail "eats his antlers, though they are also his muvierixi, the plumed feathers that transmit messages to our ancestors, and for his mistakes he is transformed into the rabbit, tatsiu."

In the Ruta Wixárika guide of Mexico's Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH), candles are "Elemento ritual básico. Representan la luz del Sol y la conexión con las deidades" (a basic ritual element. They represent the light of the Sun and the connection with the deities), and they are lit as offerings at the sacred sites.
