Luisa Montoya

Luisa Montoya (b. 1995) is a Colombian American painter and draftswoman, born in Bogotá, where she lives and works. According to her gallery, she graduated from Marymount Manhattan College in New York in 2020 in art and art history, with honors.

In her own account, drawing is usually the way she thinks: she sketches daily for an hour or two, and the drawings she likes graduate into paintings. She generally works from life, though lately she has been working with family archives. She has said that landscape, in its historical sense, is "incredibly masculine," and so "a very interesting space to occupy." Texts published by Concordia in 2024 and by Galería [SN] in 2026 describe work centered on the everyday intimacy of interior and exterior spaces, and on how vegetation, gardens and house plants keep traces of relationships.

In April 2022 Galería [SN] in Bogotá presented Dogwood, paintings built around the dogwood shrub, whose bark keeps its color through the winter, and snow-covered ground in the low winter light of New England. From October 17 to November 7, 2024, she was one of six Colombian artists in 05:59, a group show presented by Concordia at NADA East Broadway in New York. From January 23 to March 1, 2025, Nueveochenta's project room in Bogotá showed Un campo, painting and animation exercises that start from sketches of views recorded from a train window on a trip from New York to Rhode Island.

In March 2025 Galería [SN] announced that it represents her, and in September of that year she was part of its group stand at ARTBO. On March 12, 2026, the gallery opened Good Boy, her solo exhibition, with oil paintings on canvas and MDF and ink drawings on paper. Announcing the opening, the gallery quoted a text by Ana Mosseri: the work "nace de la observación de su entorno" (grows from observing her surroundings), and "Luisa pinta su vida" (Luisa paints her life). The show was on view until April 11.
