The painting's title names a kind of cell: Encyclopaedia Britannica defines a chromatophore as a "pigment-containing cell in the deeper layers of the skin of animals," sorted by the color of its pigment into black, red, yellow and white kinds.
In the first-person biography on his profile at Arte Laguna World, Billy Kasberg writes that he is "extremely interested in microbiology, specifically viruses, bacteria, fungi, and internal bodily processes." "To me, the internal beauty and conflicts of microorganisms mimic our human lives," he continues: microorganisms and people alike move, gather food, feed on other life and "live in complex environments."
